Why Our Coffee Solar Dryers Are Ideal
We are a popular solar dryer construction company in Kenya and have expertise in designing and constructing top-notch dryers.
Our dryers come in as the best solutions to challenges known in traditional or sun-drying techniques. Due to the high insulation and temperature control, moisture is removed from the harvest, and the chances of moisturization are lowered.
Solar dryers provide high-efficiency, balanced coffee drying due to enhanced energy harvesting thus reducing the time taken to dry the berries.
Why Coffee Should be Dried Before Processing
Keeping the moisture content of coffee berries lower is important to ensure they remain in good quality as they await processing. If left in moist conditions, coffee beans attract insects and micro-organisms. Moisture content also affects the resulting quality and taste of processed coffee.
What is a Solar Dryer?
A solar dryer is a structure designed for drying crop harvests such as coffee berries and other products. In most cases, a solar dryer is equipped with drying chambers, ventilation, and insulation materials.
We design our solar dryers with various materials depending on the type of dryer you want. Our dryers can be built of wooden or metallic structures and both of them covered with a greenhouse polythene cover.
What you Need to Make a Coffee Solar Dryer
Metallic or wooden Structure: Makes up the structure and holds the greenhouse covers that results to a solar dryer.
Greenhouse Polythene cover: Allows sunlight into the drying chamber as it it transparent and light transmissive. The thickness is of 300-micron level which enhances maximum sunlight to enter the drying chamber.
Fans: Can be fixed on the air entry to direct air inside the dryer.
Drying Chamber with Shelves: Consist of spaces designed to hold the products being dried.
Insect Nets: Covers the air exit or ventilation, to allow air out and also prevent insect entry.
How Does Solar Dryers Operate?
Coffee solar dryers commonly work by implementing air convection or circulation of hot air through the drying chamber. As air goes through the drying chamber, it dehydrates the produce and carries moisture with it, releasing it through the ventilation.
How Much is a Coffee Dryer?
The cost of Coffee Solar Dryers depends on the size of the dryer and the type of materials used to construct the structure. Metallic solar dryers cost a higher fortune compared to wooden solar dryers.

Hybrid Solar Dryers in Kenya
Our coffee solar dryers also consist of hybrid types which comes with additional integrated features to increase energy for drying food products.
The additional features include;
Heat furnace ; for buring charcoal or firewood and directing the hot air into the drying chamber.
Solar panels ; captures solar energy and transfers it to the battery cells.
Inverters : converts direct current to alternating current
Radiatiors ; gets heated and heats up the air entering the drying chamber.
Battery cells : stores solar energy for use during the absence of solar energy.
Fans : directs the air into the drying chamber.
Basically, a hybrid coffee solar dryer is an improved greenhouse solar dryer with integrated heating sources to boost drying efficiency.
Process of Coffee Solar Drying
Coffee berries takes different stages of drying categorized according to the moisture content and structure during each stage. Stages include.
- Brown or initial Stage : Stage of harvested coffee berries. it contains a moisture content of 45 to 55 percent.
- White Stage: First stage of coffee berries being introduced to the dryer. Moisture ranges from 35 – 44 percent.
- Soft Black Stage: at this stage, moisture level has reduced to a range of 23 – 34 percent.
- Medium Black Stage: Coffee becomes partially black with a moisture level of 15 – 22 percent.
- Hard Black Stage: Coffee turns completely black with a moisture level of 10 – 14 percent.
What are the Benefits of Solar Dryers?
- Coffee Solar dryers removes moisture to a recommended level as minimal heat is lost in the structure.
- The cost of drying is low due to minimal labor requirements.
- Enhances faster dehydration due to rain or humidity prevention.
- Solar drying results in quality coffee berries as it prevents damage that can occur when environmental conditions change.
- High yield of coffee can be dried at a shorter duration.’
- Solar dryers are made to last for a very long time thus ensuring profitability and less cost.
